Several European groups took part in the challenge and all the quilts were shown at the 2014 Loch Lomond show in Scotland.<br />The basic idea is that the first quilter in the group receives a photograph and has to make a quilt inspired by that picture. She then sends her quilt, without the photo, to the second quilter who makes a quilt inspired by the first one. When she's done, the second quilter sends her quilt to the next one, and so on, until the last quilter. Of course, each quilter only sees one quilt. She doesn't know what the others have done. The results are often very different and surprising.<br />In Belgium, two groups of 10 quilters took part in the challenge. The quilts were shown at the National Show in Enghien 3 weeks ago.<br />Here's a detail of my quilt...<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjniRxtGyJZC79wTV_wjCTUxUGNir8LWqJnGHFCH53rMvcfJj2oeBOpEnLlCewSzWa5EUpUdQX2CfC6PgeJpcEfCbOakVJK8WkXbHv7ymDXz4YJze3-IbMR-aJp4UoIFgq3FESAQ3Dbd_8/s1600/Tree_of_life_det1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjniRxtGyJZC79wTV_wjCTUxUGNir8LWqJnGHFCH53rMvcfJj2oeBOpEnLlCewSzWa5EUpUdQX2CfC6PgeJpcEfCbOakVJK8WkXbHv7ymDXz4YJze3-IbMR-aJp4UoIFgq3FESAQ3Dbd_8/s1600/Tree_of_life_det1.jpg" height="251" width="320" /></a></div>And here's the statement I wrote at the time I made the quilt: "I decided to keep the bridge and the tree, and to go for a colourful abstract landscape inspired by some of the quilts I made with the Twelve by Twelve international group. All my fabrics are home-dyed. I designed the tree and the bridge from pictures I took during my travels in Japan. While I was working on this quilt, sadly my mother passed away. The tree and the bridge then took an even stronger symbolic meaning for me, as the tree of life and a bridge of transition. The Japanese sign き, which reads as "ki", means tree and also spirit. It took me a full day to recover from it, but I absolutely had a great time at the show.<br />There was a large variety of quilt styles both in the competition and in the different exhibits. I think all the visitors really enjoyed it.<br /><br />In the room next to the Colorplay Twelve by Twelve display, there was a very moving exhibit dedicated to the quilts of Lutgard Gerber who was the guild's president from 1996 to 2005 and who passed away last year.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvac1eEtBth4NmPsVMwfi9ayECfJPK3rQubw7It1yreFD_6s4kJQCUuGfxL4RGoJTumV2vGGr7LNYoCHP_926FJH9kQz7lm1EmTelwVSgKaCQHvNAQA69YlsC1GxPgjbdlSjjMTzIZTso/s1600/Enghien_2014_8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvac1eEtBth4NmPsVMwfi9ayECfJPK3rQubw7It1yreFD_6s4kJQCUuGfxL4RGoJTumV2vGGr7LNYoCHP_926FJH9kQz7lm1EmTelwVSgKaCQHvNAQA69YlsC1GxPgjbdlSjjMTzIZTso/s1600/Enghien_2014_8.jpg" height="225" width="320" /></a></div>The weather was summery for the first three days. It turned a bit cooler on Sunday but it stayed dry, which is nice.<br />As you can see in the mosaic, there was even a little train going around the park and linking both sites of the show. Here's a picture of my design wall today...<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaFp9Fr2W5FdlIHGGQWor8bOiYAqY5VAJDAYZzcqoJOrTBZcAWatMdke28089I9B8tns57LpAEY8QUttIZ5YVRSM76mv1MPoAcvnUSFWFV0QIQy5X5qIXBzqWvfTCoqIb10ztcDnq3z-Y/s1600/designwall_09-01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaFp9Fr2W5FdlIHGGQWor8bOiYAqY5VAJDAYZzcqoJOrTBZcAWatMdke28089I9B8tns57LpAEY8QUttIZ5YVRSM76mv1MPoAcvnUSFWFV0QIQy5X5qIXBzqWvfTCoqIb10ztcDnq3z-Y/s1600/designwall_09-01.jpg" height="319" width="320" /></a></div>Each block is a 4''x4'' square. The idea is to make a quilt for the sofa. Yes, I need to make many more blocks, but I'm going slowly... One hour of Japanese, 15 minutes of sewing, one hour of Japanese, etc..<br /><br />During the summer, I started crocheting a ripple blanket, inspired by the lovely Lucy at <a href="http://attic24.typepad.com/weblog/">Attic24</a>. (Please have a look at her beautiful blog!)<br />I just wanted to finish up all my yarn leftovers, but of course I ended up buying some new yarn...<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE7_DKIM0Nz1RGt7GKoJntkcS0PZ5MuKUMSsqnDhWIjwbPC1lLIn8JPReOWaZtuWRkt7JuosGh7EXFOuSmFDICy5wHxikrnpumYTYCQpSot39kDM6pDBh2dtHQj2U7i_huzQKxYf38hew/s1600/blanket_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE7_DKIM0Nz1RGt7GKoJntkcS0PZ5MuKUMSsqnDhWIjwbPC1lLIn8JPReOWaZtuWRkt7JuosGh7EXFOuSmFDICy5wHxikrnpumYTYCQpSot39kDM6pDBh2dtHQj2U7i_huzQKxYf38hew/s1600/blanket_1.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>And now, I've got more leftovers, so I've been making these little granny squares...<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaEAHJ8__0hUhW3TUOahjzE3lweCrF1viq7gWZ497nkyfANV_OGp9UYgD0jh5Vk3bk1jMwRnGFX__TNe2Qh83Dbp3Xeglejey_pa1oK0rcXbHj1GOxjGqj8GfJmhm1rdLVOFeHToBLHfQ/s1600/grannysquares_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaEAHJ8__0hUhW3TUOahjzE3lweCrF1viq7gWZ497nkyfANV_OGp9UYgD0jh5Vk3bk1jMwRnGFX__TNe2Qh83Dbp3Xeglejey_pa1oK0rcXbHj1GOxjGqj8GfJmhm1rdLVOFeHToBLHfQ/s1600/grannysquares_1.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>I don't know yet what I'll do with them. Actually, I didn't travel a lot this year, but I took some time away from the computer in order to recharge my batteries.<br />Now it looks like summer is over already. It's raining cats and dogs, and it really feels like it's time to go back to the studio.<br /><br />I made this little quilt top from dyed and printed fabrics.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUTQuMCMWMpADa890NH9eNM40g_fBQzeTNt3b670yGe8XEfbIfOo5BklHfiUkoMrXupByVg_PihJ0FqSGhU-3hA2ouMj3ZtgqfR6QWJc1e7Lw-GrrxbU1xCZy4yCKGFz0hiDdn96TcLoY/s1600/PinkGarden_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUTQuMCMWMpADa890NH9eNM40g_fBQzeTNt3b670yGe8XEfbIfOo5BklHfiUkoMrXupByVg_PihJ0FqSGhU-3hA2ouMj3ZtgqfR6QWJc1e7Lw-GrrxbU1xCZy4yCKGFz0hiDdn96TcLoY/s1600/PinkGarden_1.jpg" height="234" width="320" /></a></div>It's about 30 by 40cm.<br /><br />Last week, I had a little student. I introduced her to counted-thread embroidery. I took some pictures but I forgot to download them. The yarn I'm using for my crochet project is Tahiti by Schachenmayr. When I saw it in the shop, I just couldn't resist.<br /><br />Yesterday, I finished the blue scrap quilt. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTPSSrZkeg215Aolllggr4W8_9HPtcM_iHMb9tMhaIDIjzkondnRzJTuW9yiaUdo1MpbbBYEs1kI9mo5PJ-0D2YKJzAU7TlHE1HJlXupDydB6Wiac_ouIwU-CLuPjKHI18KhriWCuh3T8/s1600/Bluescraps_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTPSSrZkeg215Aolllggr4W8_9HPtcM_iHMb9tMhaIDIjzkondnRzJTuW9yiaUdo1MpbbBYEs1kI9mo5PJ-0D2YKJzAU7TlHE1HJlXupDydB6Wiac_ouIwU-CLuPjKHI18KhriWCuh3T8/s320/Bluescraps_1.jpg" /></a></div>Although I intend to keep the vertical orientation, I think it also looks good like this... <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFXuxf4u11PZJyOSYRyxVuCckco7fvGzL8LI_DSw46AmmPy1Hl-EwnrOLDxkA2NftPAEixtOaBNtdGRhlQRUrM4urW_6BuF3S47iLVDES6bWKCC_mbonnTap-AdiuPs9yIOfZkkPzjOxU/s1600/Bluescraps_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFXuxf4u11PZJyOSYRyxVuCckco7fvGzL8LI_DSw46AmmPy1Hl-EwnrOLDxkA2NftPAEixtOaBNtdGRhlQRUrM4urW_6BuF3S47iLVDES6bWKCC_mbonnTap-AdiuPs9yIOfZkkPzjOxU/s320/Bluescraps_2.jpg" /></a></div>I'm also done, at last, with my cottolin warp.<br />I tried several twill weaves and paid special attention to the selvedges. It's been a long time since I worked on such a large quilt.<br />It's not really that large I know, but for the last few years I had been making small pieces. 12"x12" or even smaller. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVXdYm5pmNJ_KZGEJsxK7tj5iGxB7kg_e76j0SUoyPv1daGMsMshM59jcvqfLdmvAcKtqJlOBM2tfHFxzd36nTYLs-8VbFA3cAv7R8tHf2xmPzZEE2GzHi0OQzQI31FO2PiPDvaaSRjfw/s1600/sandwich_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVXdYm5pmNJ_KZGEJsxK7tj5iGxB7kg_e76j0SUoyPv1daGMsMshM59jcvqfLdmvAcKtqJlOBM2tfHFxzd36nTYLs-8VbFA3cAv7R8tHf2xmPzZEE2GzHi0OQzQI31FO2PiPDvaaSRjfw/s1600/sandwich_1.jpg" height="271" width="320" /></a></div>I did the sandwich in the usual way and usual place (my living room floor). Just finished the binding this morning. It was a panel I found in <a href="http://www.kalquilts.com/" target="_blank">Kaleidoscope</a> quilt shop, bought on a whim. The lovely coloiured fabric in the border and binding is one that has been in my stash for more years than I care to remember. It must have been waiting for this particular quilt because the colours match so very well.<br /><br />I had planned on quilting it myself but instead I sent it down to <a href="http://ri.search.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0LEV2n.Bl1TYwsA5DhLBQx.;_ylu=X3oDMTE1YzR0dWczBHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDMgRjb2xvA2JmMQR2dGlkA1NNRVVLMjFfODc-/RV=2/RE=1398634367/RO=10/RU=http%3a%2f%2fwww.borderlinequilter.co.uk%2f/RK=0/RS=NRjYUrklqt7UR3Plgj_NEbjAFs4-" target="_blank">Kay Bell</a> in the borders. As always she has made a beautiful job of it. I love the dinosaur design she used very much in keeping with the quilt. Time just seems to fly past. I have been busy with classes. They finished a week or two ago and I won't be teaching anymore. I have decided to spend more time on my own projects. I am still going to keep in touch with my Monday students but I won't be back until late September.<br /><br />Apart from that I have started on the Latte quilt again, it's been a while. I have also made a start on a painted quilt spurned on after purchasing Linda Poole's new book. <br /><br />We have been busy up at the allotment and made it ready for this year's planting. <br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw_UVoGhQAAxqPa9ROYlK5QRm1L_YQYyOU2W3SB8pZJRP0I2igVb0GRkO_4uWwDakvqJHRsRlcJgiRkiM2jNBIZ2S-LKIOoPCSg6F324SPbnvq1JgzHHvw8ib26W6GPc5eHgr-fOprr6JG/s1600/cabbage+bed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw_UVoGhQAAxqPa9ROYlK5QRm1L_YQYyOU2W3SB8pZJRP0I2igVb0GRkO_4uWwDakvqJHRsRlcJgiRkiM2jNBIZ2S-LKIOoPCSg6F324SPbnvq1JgzHHvw8ib26W6GPc5eHgr-fOprr6JG/s1600/cabbage+bed.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>All the beds are looking good. Yesterday I planted 3 varieties of onions as they had started to sprout, they are covered with mesh so if it does got cold and we have frost they should be OK. <br /><br />I took the chitted potatoes to plant but the ground is a little too wet at the moment maybe later in the week if it stays dry.<br /><br /><br /><br />salman khanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09222521689941293556noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7445460402947944040.post-28413450721906453562014-04-07T10:58:00.000-07:002014-12-10T23:42:11.241-08:00From the studio<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimfjx4m_RDBSFK9PEMS274hcLQD9A7wMoNDH8b1ZfE-zrNl7eW2QHwlIkupGHnEaPgbaBCeYV-XTOTkS9WibuINIQijOXCF2frF2_wzfYauGa4RzbWaG20kRnJ6vENkxwUthTbYWB2rgU/s1600/April_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimfjx4m_RDBSFK9PEMS274hcLQD9A7wMoNDH8b1ZfE-zrNl7eW2QHwlIkupGHnEaPgbaBCeYV-XTOTkS9WibuINIQijOXCF2frF2_wzfYauGa4RzbWaG20kRnJ6vENkxwUthTbYWB2rgU/s1600/April_1.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>I started quilting the little scrap quilts that I did last winter. (Or was it in autumn?)<br /><br />The larger quilt is going well.<br />I printed the last pieces of fabric. And today I finished piecing the top. Saturday, I dyed a large piece of blue fabric for the backing.<br />I'll try and prepare the sandwich tomorrow.<br /><br />I also did some cross stitch embroidery that will be used for a surprise gift. (No picture, it's a surprise!)<br /><br />And then, a collaged postcard made with some of my gelli prints. <br /><br />Last week, I spent a lot of time in the garden, cleaning pots and planting new flowers. I forgot to take pictures, but it's great to be able to work outside again.salman khanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09222521689941293556noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7445460402947944040.post-74541999843961914042014-03-29T01:57:00.000-07:002014-12-10T23:42:11.307-08:00A small quilt and more printsHere's the small quilt that I made using four of my tree prints. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPU7BrAcihn2RKBKH8M3-5ciQMwh7qjHRr76bilLVGhxE8ZOSaoSSJS1UxLR2gXNqjxFcIdBwBsGQ_xh7Iu7khIMLQ9Vcodh3Z8rTcNtUjSImyvNiDRvvGc1F6dqPz9MqxlElfQCiKpXw/s1600/Arbres1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPU7BrAcihn2RKBKH8M3-5ciQMwh7qjHRr76bilLVGhxE8ZOSaoSSJS1UxLR2gXNqjxFcIdBwBsGQ_xh7Iu7khIMLQ9Vcodh3Z8rTcNtUjSImyvNiDRvvGc1F6dqPz9MqxlElfQCiKpXw/s1600/Arbres1.jpg" height="320" width="106" /></a></div>Last week, I did a demo about gelli printing at my guild meeting. I really enjoyed it and made of course lots of new prints while demonstrating. When I came back home, I had to put all the prints on my studio floor to let them dry.
